Learning & development

There are a number of tools and processes to help you to develop your technical and behavioural skills both for your current job and for future jobs in Tesco. These include, objective setting, personal development plans and performance reviews, career discussions, talent planning, training logs, to name just a few.

Your line manager will support you to develop - but ultimately it is your responsibility to take ownership and drive your career, to meet your own career goals.

Here's an outline of some of the tools and processes that are in place to help you:

  1. Objectives - detailed tasks which relate to your job. They describe what you need to achieve over a specified period of time in order to fulfill the requirements of your job.
  2. Personal Development Plans (PDPs) - a plan which details specific actions and timescales to help you grow your potential, based on "what you do" (objectives), and "how you do your job" (behaviours). PDPs are agreed at least twice a year with your line manager based on your individual development priorities.
  3. Performance Reviews - a formal process of reviewing your performance against your Objectives and Personal Development Plan with your line manager.
  4. Talent Planning - is a fair and open process which is used to identify the talent and aspirations of our people, and to plan future career moves and opportunities.
  5. Career Discussions- are formal conversations with your line manager to agree potential career progression and feed this into the Talent Planning process.
  6. Leadership Framework- defines the skills and behaviours needed to successfully motivate yourself and to lead and motivate others.
  7. Training Logs - A defined list, by job role, of the behavioural and technical training courses available for you to attend, to support your learning and development split out into three sections
    Required, Advanced and Optional.
  8. Career Progression Days - contain a series of exercises assessing you against the behavioural and technical critical success factors of your next job role.  These days provide a great opportunity to gain objective feedback and help focus your personal development.
