International

Frequently asked questions about working internationally with Clothing at Tesco.

Q1:

Do the roles differ between Clothing in the International and UK businesses?

A1:

Broadly the roles and ways of working are the same.  The same applies to the systems, processes and tools that our teams work with.  The main difference is that the product ranges are wider, and the options offered may differ from country to country.  The buying and merchandising team work closely in trading their ranges throughout the seasons.

Q2:

Will there be opportunity to travel to these countries?

A2:

Yes, this depends on the role that you do, but Merchandisers and Buyers in particular travel to the countries at least once per season to see the ranges in store, and take the learnings into the next season.

Q3:
What languages do I need to speak?

A3:

You don't necessarily need to speak the languages within the countries, but if you wished to learn a language we always encourage personal development and will find ways to support you in this.

Q4:

Who are the main competitors in International?

A4:

Auchanne and Carrefour are the biggest supermarket/hypermarket competitors in these countries.  Tesco is the market leader of fashionable clothing within these environments. Other brands that are in the UK such as Zara and H & M also have a presence in Europe.

Q5:

What are our European customers looking for?

A5:

The great feedback and positive sales that we have generated from our kidswear ranges indicates that our European customers are receptive to the styling and fashionability of the products that we sell in our UK stores.  We continue to listen and respond to customer feedback, and this gives us opportunity to experiment with new ideas and styles to build on our successes for the future, across all clothing categories.

Q6:

What impact would working in International Clothing have on my career?

A6:

The experience you could gain in the International business - translating our fashion globally will add value to your portfolio of experience, and your personal career development.

Q7:

Where is the product sourced from?

A7:

We have a direct sourcing model, with hubs in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Turkey, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.   We also source product from Europe, from countries including Italy, Egypt, Morocco, Bulgaria.  We continuously work with our factories and are proud of our ethical record.

Q8:

What sort of roles exist in the International Clothing business?

A8:

We have teams of in buying, merchandising, design, technical & legal, store stock planning supply chain, retail support and marketing, as well as finance.  The teams work very closely together to ensure that they play their part in developing the International business.
